Katogi Averoff hotel & winery is a 4 star boutique hotel situated at the scenic village of Metsovo in Epirus Greece. On my recent visit to Metsovo I was lucky enough to stay there.

The Katogi Averoff Hotel & Winery
We arrived at the hotel on an icy cold morning along with our dog Charlie. We parked our car just outside the hotel and headed to the lobby. The reception area was soothingly warm and the reception staff was very friendly and welcoming. We were very shortly shown to our room which was on the ground floor.

The room was very spacious with wooden furniture and warm colors. The double bed was incredibly comfortable and the fluffy down duvet and pillows were like lying in a cloud.

Other room amenities included a mini bar, a closet with a full length mirror, a safe, a flat screen TV, a writing desk and a sitting area.

The room was very beautifully designed with elegant features and a nice bit of local character. From our room window we enjoyed views over the winery and the surrounding mountains.

The bathroom had a walk in shower and was well stocked with Apivita toiletries, fluffy bathrobes, slippers and a hairdryer.

One thing that makes this hotel particularly interesting is that it has its own winery that makes one of the countries most celebrated wines.
After settling to our room I headed to the winery. The story of the winery starts at the late 1950’s when Evangelos Averoff planted the first Cabernet Sauvignon vines of Greece in the slopes of mountain Pindos. The first wine was bottled at his house basement and is now widely known as Katogi (which means basement in Greek) Averoff. The winery’s vineyards are among the country’s most mountainous vineyards at an altitude of 1.000 m.

The winery has undertaken several renovations and expansions over the years and now has all the necessary facilities for producing and bottling wine. At the wineries facilities the visitor can have a tour of the winery and its cellars where over 1200 oak barrels with red wine mature.

The friendly staff will tell you about the history of the winery and the wine production. There is also a fully equipped bar for wine tasting and a shop selling the wineries wines. Tours in English are available upon previous arrangement with the winery.

After the tour at the winery we had a walk in the town of Metsovo. Another advantage of the hotel is its location. It ‘s only a 5 minute walk from the central square of Metsovo where all the restaurants, bars and shops and attractions are. You just park your car at the hotel and you can reach everything on foot without worrying about parking in the center of the town.
At night we went at the hotel’s bar where we tasted some of the wineries superb wines along with local delicacies like the famous metsovone cheese. It was the perfect ending of a great day.
In the morning we enjoyed a buffet style breakfast. The buffet was big and had everything you would expect from a luxury hotel plus many local products like pies that Epirus is famous for, traditional Greek sweets and a variety of cheese and ham made in the region.

My stay at the Katogi Averoff hotel and winery was an absolute delight. If you are looking for a hotel in Metsovo in a central location with elegant surroundings and wonderful staff this is the one.
