Makares Apartments in Donousa Island, Greece

At the end of September, we decided with my husband to spend a few days on the island of Donousa, part of the Small Cyclades complex in Greece. After some online research and personal recommendations from friends, we decided to stay at Makares Apartments.

Location:

Makares Apartments are located in Stavros, the main village and port of Donousa island. It is 5 minutes on foot from Stavros beach and 10 minutes from Kedros beach. The village shops, the ATM and the restaurants and bars of the island are also located 5 minutes on foot from the apartments.

First Impressions: 

As soon as we booked our ferry tickets we informed the owner, Mr Loukas what time our ferry arrives. When we got off the ferry he was there to greet us and take us to the apartments. It was a short 2 minutes drive to get there. The hotel offers a free shuttle service from and to the port at the days of your arrival and departure. In case you arrive by your own vehicle, there is free parking available on site.

The Apartments:

Makares apartments offer luxurious self-catering accommodation options. There is a choice between studios with balcony located on the upper floors, studios with terrace located on the ground floor and maisonettes and apartments that can accommodate more than two people.

All rooms have sea views, outdoor furnishing and free wi-fi.

Our Room:

We were allocated in a studio with balcony on the first floor. Our room was spacious with pastel colours and wooden ceilings built and decorated according to the Cycladic architecture.

Our bed was big and comfortable with Cocomat mattresses. The pillows and linen were also luxurious. There was also a wardrobe available to hang our clothes and a safety deposit box. I particularly liked the hand painted table with its matching mirror. You could see the room was decorated with an attention to detail.

In one corner of the room, there was available a small fully equipped kitchen perfect for preparing your own meals. A coffee maker with capsules was also available. A variety of capsules could be bought at a nominal fee from the reception.

Other room features included air-conditioning, heating and a flat-screen TV with satellite channels  Even a mosquito repellent was at our disposal.

What I loved about our room is that I was falling asleep every night with the sound of the sea!

Bathroom:

The bathroom was luxurious with built in shower and fluffy towels. Only hand wash was available so don’t forget to bring your own toiletries. A hair dryer was also available.

Balcony:

The most impressive feature of our room was the balcony. Fully equipped with 2 chairs, a table, and an umbrella for the sun it even had an outside socket for my laptop. It also had the most amazing view of the Aegean sea and the nearby islands. From our balcony, we also enjoyed some amazing sunsets as well.

There is also a big outdoor seating area with free -WiFi where you can sit and enjoy the view.

The owner and the rest of the staff were very polite and helpful. They answer all our questions, they gave us the schedule of the bus and boat and recommended some lovely tavernas and beaches on the island.

We really enjoyed our stay in Makares apartments and I really recommend it to anyone looking for a luxurious yet traditional accommodation on the island of Donousa.
