A walking tour is a perfect way to explore a city like Athens, but what about a night walking tour? I haven’t done that before, and I was eager to try it, so on a beautiful evening of September I met my guide Marialena and the rest of the group in Syntagma square, and we embarked on the Night Crawlers tour of Athens by Greeking me.

Ermou Street, Athens

Kapnikarea Church, Ermou Street, Athens
We started our tour at Syntagma Square, home of the Greek Parliament and ex-palace of King Otto. Our walk took us through the main shopping street of Athens, Ermou Street and the old church of Kapnikarea.
We then walked through the small alleys of Plaka, Athens’s oldest neighbourhood where we passed by some important archaeological sites like the Roman Agora, the Tower of the Winds which is the world’s oldest weather station before arriving at the lit up Acropolis Museum.

Roman Agora and the Acropolis

The Tower of the Winds in Ancient Agora, Athens
We walked Areopagitou street one of the most beautiful and expensive streets of Athens, with the impressive neoclassical buildings on the one side and the Acropolis on the other until we reached the area of Thissio.

The Acropolis Museum

Lysikrates Monument, Plaka
Thissio is a lively neighbourhood with many cafes and restaurants under the shadow of the Acropolis.
Our road took us to the buzzing area of Monastiraki where we saw the Ancient Agora and the Temple of Hephaistus, the best preserved ancient temple.
As we walked through the alleys of Monastiraki area, our guide took us to two unique cafe-bars that only local’s know; a rooftop bar with incredible views of the Acropolis and a cafe-bar that used to me a motel of the 17th century with stables.

Street Performers in Athens
Next, we headed towards Psyrri a neighbourhood of Athens full of old shops, restaurants and bars. There we had the chance to visit the place that makes the best koulouri in the whole Athens and pass by, in my opinion, the best dessert shop in the centre before ending up at a traditional taverna for dinner.

At the taverna, we tried local wine and ouzo which we accompanied with a variety of traditional Greek food, like dolmadakia, tzatziki, kebab, meatballs and much more delicacies.

Greek Delicasies
Our guide Marilena is a certified guide and has studied archaeology so she has a vast knowledge of the history of the city. During our walk, she shared with us fascinating historical information about the sites we saw and practical advice on where to go, where to eat and drink the rest of our days in Athens.
I had a great time, on this evening tour of Athens with Greeking Me, not only did I see the city in a different perspective but I also learned a lot of interesting facts about it.
I was a guest of Greeking me but as always opinions are my own.
