A wonderful stay at Porto Scoutari Hotel in Patmos island

The Porto Scoutari Romantic Hotel and Suites is a luxurious and charming hotel on the Greek island of Patmos. This classically Greek-styled hotel overlooks the Aegean Sea and Meloi Bay from its secluded, yet easily accessible, location. I stayed at this luxury resort with several other Greek travel bloggers for four nights during a media stay.

Location

The Porto Scoutari hotel is nestled among a palm garden, lush native plants, and unique sculptures. The resort’s enviable location, in a valley at the top of the hill above Meloi Bay, is in the perfect location to capture the sunset, not to mention the serene Greek island breeze. It is also a mere kilometre to the busy town of Skala, the port of Patmos; the hotel can arrange to meet you off the ferries upon your arrival and offers free transfer back to the ferry upon your departure.

There is no airport on Patmos, however there is one on the nearby island of Kos and Samos, if you prefer to fly from Athens to the islands. There is a fast ferry from both Piraeus, Kos and Samos that arrives daily in Skala.

Check-in at the Porto Scoutari Romantic Hotel and Suites

I arrived with the other bloggers, at 3:00 in the morning, on the boat from Piraeus, the port of Athens. We took our rented car and headed to the hotel. A staff member was there to meet us and show us to our room. We met Mrs Scoutari, the delightful owner of the hotel, the next morning. She has decorated the resort with love; every room and common space is filled with antiques, nautical memorabilia, and authentic grandfather clocks.

Our Room

Elena, Jelena and I stayed in a plush and luxurious Junior Suite room called the Kastelorizo. There were two large double beds, both ensconced in beautifully carved wooden furniture, a couch and dressing table, simple white-washed walls, and a modern bathroom complete with a stand alone Jacuzzi shower. There are several other room styles at Porto Scoutari, some with pool views and others with sea views. Ours had a sea view from our private terrace.

Upon our arrival, we found a bottle of wine, bottled water, and freshly baked cakes in our suite, courtesy of the hotel staff. After eight hours on the ferry, this was a welcome surprise!

We also checked our friend’s Dave’s room:

Breakfast

Breakfast at Porto Scoutari is served in the 12 Island Bistro, which is located next to the reception area. It overlooks the pool. There were a selection of cold meats and cheese, freshly baked cakes, cereals, freshly squeezed fruit juices, bacon and eggs, and more.

Everything that could be homemade, was homemade! The highlight at the Porto Scoutari breakfast had to be the mouthwatering, delicious cakes. Each afternoon, as I passed the restaurant, I could smell the cakes being made.

Staff at the hotel was absolutely wonderful. One morning, we asked to have breakfast a half an hour earlier than the stated time, and we were accommodated without hesitation.

Greek Meze by the pool

One evening, we enjoyed a selection of meze on the terrace near the pool. Meze are a selection of appetizer-style dishes, or antipasti if you are familiar with the Italian style. There were olives, feta cheese, vegetable kebabs, cheese pies, meatballs, and more. We also sampled the traditional Greek liquor, ouzo. This clear, anise-flavoured spirit becomes a milky opal white when mixed with ice or a drop of water and is similar to other Mediterranean liqueurs like raki, pastis, or sambuca.

Mrs Scoutari also joined us on the terrace and we spent some time swapping stories. She was not born on Patmos, although she is Greek. After operating a successful tourism agency in the United States, she returned to her native Greece to open Porto Scoutari. It is very clear that the hotel is a work of love and of art. The reception, the rooms, and the dining spaces are all decorated with local Greek and island art. Mrs Scoutari is always around the property, checking on her guests and making sure that you feel at home at Porto Scoutari. No request is too small and most requests can be accommodated with ease.

The Grounds of Porto Scoutari Hotel

The grounds at Porto Scoutari are tranquil and serene. Because the hotel is outside of the busy port town, at most you will hear the soft crash of the waves on the shore below the hotel or possibly the sounds of Aris, the resident parrot who has made the garden at Porto Scoutari his home for the last twenty years.

The pool at Porto Scoutari is nestled among the bungalows, which are arranged in a half moon shape as to take advantage of the sea views. A stroll through the gardens at Porto Scoutari is a must.

My stay at Porto Scoutari was wonderful, and I highly recommend this hotel to anyone on your next visit to the romantic Greek island of Patmos.
